Effects of Different Planting Patterns on the Growth and Yield of Maize and Soybean in Northwest China

Aboveground and belowground interactions are crucial in the over-yielding of intercropping systems. However, relative effects aboveground on yields maize (Zea mays L.) soybean (Glycine max) systems still unclear. Field experiments, including measurements plant height, soil-plant analysis development (SPAD) value, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), root length density (RLD), volume (RVD), grain yield, were conducted 2018-2019 to analyze advantages above-ground inter-species interactions. This study adopted three different planting patterns: mono-cropping (MM), soybeans (MS), maize-soybean (IM IS). showed that promotes growth makes have a better photosynthetic environment, while is inhibited environment becomes worse. In upper layer (0-40 cm) close plants, distribution intercropped increased, resulting greater density, decreased, lower density. The increased yield by 18.52-19.8%, reduced 55.87-57.44%. results indicated improves competitiveness reduces soybeans. increase made up for loss led an overall significant advantage system.
